1. How do you bring real world STEM challenges to life in your science classroom?
To bring real-world STEM challenges to life in my science classroom, I use a variety of methods. I incorporate lab experiments and project-based learning to create hands-on experiences for students. Interactive classwork helps students gain a better understanding of STEM concepts. I emphasize that STEM integrates multiple subjects and is relevant to everyday life, making it easier for students to see how these concepts apply in the real world and how they can navigate these challenges effectively.
2. What is your favorite place in Washington, D.C., to bring your students for informal learning experiences, and why?
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is fantastic because it offers a wide range of exhibits that captivate students, from dinosaur fossils to ocean life. These engaging displays make complex scientific concepts accessible and exciting for young learners.
The Spy Museum is also a great choice as it provides interactive exhibits and activities that allow students to explore the world of espionage. It offers a hands-on experience that not only sparks curiosity but also helps students understand the importance of critical thinking and problem-solving in a fun and memorable way.
3. What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part of my job is seeing the smiles on my 5th and 6th graders' faces when they arrive at school each day. I especially love witnessing their excitement during lab experiments. Their enthusiasm and curiosity are truly inspiring, particularly when they engage in hands-on activities and enjoy the fun aspects of the labs, such as the opportunity to sample their own creations. These moments of joy and discovery are incredibly rewarding and remind me why I love teaching. Additionally, I take pride in showing students that representation matters and explaining the diverse and exciting STEM careers they could pursue.
4. What is one activity or workshop from the STEM Teacher Leadership Academy that you plan on sharing with your own students?
One activity from the STEM Teacher Leadership Academy that I plan to share with my students is using Ozobots to introduce them to the world of coding. This interactive learning experience will allow students to see how the robots can follow commands and detect colors. I am confident that the students will love working with these robots. The Ozobots will open their eyes to the possibilities of interactive technology and innovation, and they will be amazed at how something so small can be so powerful. I can’t wait to receive my starter kit and get started with my students. This hands-on activity will not only make learning fun but also spark their interest in technology, coding, and the world of robotics.
Thank you so much, Tara! Welcome back to a new school year, everyone.
