Application Deadline: Teacher Innovator Institute at the National Air and Space Museum
The National Air and Space Museum's Teacher Innovator Institute (TII) will welcome up to 30 teachers from across the United States each summer. Teachers will remain with the program for two summers, returning to Washington, DC in year two to reconnect, develop their practice, and mentor the newest class of Teacher Innovators.
Saturday STEM Expo at UDC
If you are a student or student coordinator in the National Capital Region, the Saturday STEM Expo at the University of the District of Columbia is a wonderful opportunity to learn about exciting STEM roles in a range of agencies and organizations. Interact with dozens of local institutions and build connections that could kickstart your career! The event is free and open to students in grades K-12 from in and around Washington, D.C. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to attend.
Application Deadline: Akamai Program
The Akamai Internship Program offers college students from Hawai‘i an opportunity to gain summer work experience at an observatory, company, or scientific/technical facility in or affiliated with Hawaiʻi. Similar to last year, they will have placements available in Hilo and Waimea on Big Island, Kihei and Pukalani on Maui, as well as at UC Observatories, Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, they will not be hosting interns in Kona this year.
The program has placements for students from community colleges and four-year universities from a wide range of STEM majors. Akamai is a unique program with a long history of success. There are now more than 500 Akamai alumni, and more than 250 working in STEM jobs.

For these virtual engagements your classroom will be assigned an Airman volunteer (military or civilian). The volunteer will virtually meet with you and your students for a 20-30 minute presentation and question and answer session. Educators and volunteers will choose a date and time that works with all schedules.

U.S. PhET Fellows are K-12 educators based in Title 1 and CEP public schools in the United States who are committed to:
advancing student learning of math and science in K-12 Title 1 and CEP schools
improving teacher learning and uptake of math and science pedagogies; and
engaging in professional leadership growth through activities that increase accessibility and impact of PhET simulations.
The Fellows will serve as primary actors of the PhET for Schools Network and the wider U.S. community by leveraging their direct link to PhET team members and their robust professional networks.
National Paper Airplane Day with the US Air Force
It’s National Paper Airplane Day! Celebrate by learning the basics of flight from the US Air Force. Learn about the forces that allow your airplane to fly with maximum performance. Whose airplane can fly fastest and furthest? Each student should have a sheet (or two!) of paper as we will be folding paper airplanes during the session.
SHE Can STEAM Camps at the National Air and Space Museum (Apply Today!)
The National Air and Space Museum hopes to change representation in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) fields by engaging and empowering our Soaring High Explorers (S.H.E.) to seek out and succeed in STEAM fields. In summer 2025, they’ll hold their annual S.H.E. Can STEAM Summer Camp, serving local and underrepresented communities in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
2025 STEM Teacher Leadership Academy
Join the next cohort of accomplished STEM teachers as they take on deep inquiry, informal learning connections, and career-based learning opportunities alongside engineers, researchers, and museum specialists. Be a part of a community of teacher leaders who wish to expand upon their practice, explore basic science research, and return to the classroom feeling energized and empowered.
This program is designed for K-12 teachers in around the National Capital Region who seek to infuse science, technology, engineering, and math into their lessons and explore the world of basic science research. Participants in this program will receive a $1,000 stipend following their participation in the program.

Your student's project could be an award winner! Encourage your students with an existing environmental stewardship project or an idea for a project to apply so that their achievements can be further recognized. Applicants from all 50 states as well as U.S. territories are eligible to compete for a national Presidential award.

SMART Scholarship Application Deadline
STEM Opportunity for High School Seniors, Undergraduate, and Graduate Students!
The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program awards full-tuition STEM scholarships to hundreds of rising college freshman, current college students, and current U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees every year. Funded by the DoD, SMART offers a unique education and workforce development opportunity. During degree pursuit, SMART scholars receive an annual stipend enabling them to focus on their studies. Then, scholars dive into exciting summer internships at world-class DoD facilities during school breaks. Here, they engage in cutting-edge research critical to national defense and receive mentorship from top scientists and engineers, honing their skills and building a solid foundation for their future career. After graduation, scholars are springboarded into a rewarding DoD civilian career. They begin their one-for-one service commitment by directly applying their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges, contributing to the nation's security and technological advancement.

As we mark five years since its establishment, discover the opportunities available in space STEM careers.
This session will spotlight the top five STEM careers that are crucial to the Space Force’s mission, including aerospace engineering, satellite operations, space systems engineering, cybersecurity, and data science. You’ll gain insight into what each role entails, the skills and education needed, and how these careers contribute to the mission of protecting U.S. and allied interests in space.

Hypersonic Horizons 2024: The High Speed Video Challenge
The Joint Hypersonics Transition Office (JHTO) is pleased to announce the release of Hypersonic Horizons 2024: The High Speed Video Challenge! This video competition is intended to introduce students to hypersonics science concepts and career opportunities. Students will answer questions designed to spark an interest in hypersonic technology and space travel and will have a chance at part of a $32,000 prize pool!

The Path to Equality for Women Military Aviators

OSIRIS-REx: Revealing Secrets from the Dawn of Our Solar System
In this lecture, Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx primary investigator and professor at the University of Arizona, will discuss the findings from the first set of data from analysis of the Bennu samples.
This program will be presented in-person in Planetarium at the National Air and Space Museum in DC and will be streamed live on YouTube.
Life Cycle of an Aircraft
This session will highlight the life cycle of an aircraft, from the engineers who build, to the pilots who fly and the technicians who maintain them. Hear from each member of the team to explore their role in an aircraft’s production.
Not Your Typical Air Force Job
Did you know there are a variety of careers in the Air Force beyond aviation? In this session we will explore a variety of jobs you may not think of when discussing the Air Force. There will be several Air Force members in this panel talking about their role in the Air Force. We will explore their careers, education, training, and day to day activities.

NASA "Dream With Us" Design Challenge Submission Deadline
The 2024 Dream with Us design challenge is NOW OPEN! For students ages 13-18, this team-based challenge gives students a chance to share their vision for the future of aviation with NASA experts. This year’s theme is focused on natural disasters--students are developing new and improved ways aviation can help with natural disaster response.

World Quantum Day with the US Air Force!
April 14th is World Quantum Day. Let’s celebrate with the US Air Force! Students will be introduced to the concept of quantum science with Dr. Michael Senatore, expert on quantum computing from Rome Labs in Rome, New York. Students will learn about quantum science and how it relates to every-day things, and solving real life problems. Dr. Senatore will describe his work in the quantum lab and share a day in the life of an Air Force scientist.
National STEM Festival
The U.S. Department of Education, in partnership with EXPLR, will co-present the first-ever National STEM Festival to celebrate student achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This festival is dedicated to showcasing innovative student solutions to urgent global challenges.
Your Place in Space: Exploring Space Force Careers
In celebration of “Find Your Place in Space” Week (April 6-13, 2024), join the Air and Space Forces STEM Office for a virtual panel with members of the U.S. Space Force who will share their space career journeys and how they found “their place in space”.
Solar Eclipse Festival on the National Mall
Celebrate and observe the solar eclipse that will be visible all across North America on Monday, April 8! The National Air and Space Museum, in collaboration with other Smithsonian museums, NASA, NOAA, and the National Science Foundation, presents an outdoor festival with activities for all ages.The eclipse will be visible in the Washington, DC area between 2:04 pm and 4:32 pm. Maximum eclipse will be at 3:20 pm, with the Sun 89% covered by the Moon.
Visitors should bring their own eclipse glasses to the event. Please check the resources listed NASM’s solar eclipse deep dive for information on how to obtain safe eclipse glasses or solar viewers.
